3. Learning the craft.
A vocational animator is not born,
he is made. Just as one learns to be a blacksmith by forging, one effort calls
for another effort. It is frequent that, when one begins to carry out this
service, does not know how to do it, but observing what other vocational
promoters do, proposing initiatives and putting effort, one learns something in
this craft. Once you know how to swim, you can go into deep water.
The apostolic letter "Announce", addressed to
consecrated persons, gives us some clues how we as vocation promoters can learn
the craft of vocation animation.
- Raise questions. Questioning
ourselves about how we are doing things, reviewing and evaluating leads us to
discover new possibilities, problems have the pedagogical power to encourage
creativity. The human race has progressed by facing the challenges that reality
has presented and overcoming them and thanks to the cooperative genius with
which we have been created. Making questions and asking ourselves is good, this
makes us leave our schemes and opens us to an uncertain but exciting future.
Let us not be afraid of them, for they are the ones who help us learn in our
vocational work.
- Motivation
by contagion. As an epidemic also in vocational animation, the
vocation is transmitted by contagion. It is necessary that the load of
vocational viruses be strong enough to break the defensive barriers of the
called. Although it may seem not like this, many times, if not in all, we are
mediators of the vocation of others by our example, by our testimony which
others perceive in us when we live together. Others are able to discover the
treasure we carry in clay pots. In spite of our weaknesses the vocational grace
that inhabits us surpasses them and is capable of touching the depths of those
whom God has chosen. Osmosis is an interesting physical phenomenon that can
help us in the vocational task: without unnecessary expenditure of energy the
vocational particles placed in us, pass through the semipermeable membrane of
the consciousness of the other, and help him to grow in his vocation. The
curious thing about vocational osmosis is that it is not about doing, but about
being and accompanying. We would say that it is the passive but effective part
of vocational animation, as necessary as the active one.
- Reliability.
It has to do with confidence and credibility. We are
reliable if we trust in ourselves. Therefore, one of the fields in which the
vocation animator has to work is in the self-confidence that comes from the trust
in God, of which we have spoken above. Trusting in ourselves makes us available
to help others and open to cooperation with the other agents of vocational
animation, i.e. the teamwork of which we speak ahead. It also makes us
coherent, because we are what we say we are and we do what we say, respecting
what has been agreed upon, programmed and promised. This makes the vocation
animator credible, that is the
candidates and their families consider him reliable and therefore take the step
of initiating or continuing processes of vocational discernment[1].
What have I learned so far about vocation animation?
How do I question myself and become a credible
mediator in vocational animation?
